Steamed herbal compresses: deep warmth with a calming scent
Steamed compresses of Thai herbs loosen a stiff back and wrap you in a calming scent.

Thai massage with hot herbal compresses is an age-old way to warm the body through. Cotton compresses packed with aromatic Thai herbs are heated in hot steam, and the therapist presses them onto your body. The heat loosens tight muscles, while the herbal essences warm the skin and the senses. How it compares with other warming massages is in our guide to types of massage.
It is made for cold days and a chilled, stiff body. It suits anyone who spends long days sitting with a stiff neck and shoulders, and anyone who simply can’t get warm. Unlike hot stones, here the warmth carries the scent of Thai herbs. In our salon a few steps from Old Town Square, you are in the hands of certified therapists from Southeast Asia, trained at renowned schools there.
What you take home
- Deep warmthThe heat of the steamed compresses sinks deep into stiff muscles, and tension lets go from within.
- The scent of Thai herbsThe warm compresses release the scent of the herbs, which quiets the mind and carries it away from the rush.
- A heated tableA heated table beneath you, warm compresses on your back and legs: you get up heated through.
- Deep calmWarmth, the scent of herbs and a gentle touch draw you into a meditative calm you won’t want to leave.
How it works at ESCAPE
- Arrive and slow downAt reception we welcome you with a drink that changes colour in front of you. You keep your underwear on (disposable underwear is ready if you prefer it), and on the massage table we cover you with a towel, so only the part of the body the therapist is working on is ever uncovered. There’s no hurry.
- Herbal warmth sinks into the musclesLying face down, you first get a massage with oil; then the therapist presses the steamed herbal compresses onto your body, lets them glide and interweaves them with massage strokes. She always tests their warmth on her own hand first, and adjusts the heat and pressure to what feels good to you.
- Warm tea to finishAfter the massage, sit back with a cup of warm tea and let your warmed body rest. You are welcome to take a shower if you like.
Warming with the steamed compresses isn’t suitable during pregnancy, or with inflammation, a fever or vascular problems; in that case we’ll gladly recommend the gentler Aromatherapy Massage. Please arrive 15 minutes early, so you can start without rushing.
the story behind it
Origins and tradition
In Thai, a herbal compress is luk prakhop: luk means a ball, prakhop to press on a warm compress. There is no fixed recipe, but the traditional blend rests on plai rhizome, a relative of ginger, and on turmeric, with salt to help hold the heat. Traditionally the compress is steamed to release the herbs’ aromatic oils, and two are used in turn, one working while the other reheats. UNESCO, too, names hot herbal compresses in describing traditional Thai massage.

Your questions about the Thai herbal compress massage
Aren’t the compresses too hot?
No. We adjust the temperature so that it feels pleasant, and the therapist always tests it on her own hand before applying a compress. If it still feels too hot, just say so.
Which herbs are in the compresses?
A blend of aromatic Thai herbs that warm and relax. The cotton compresses are heated in hot steam before they are applied, so your body receives both the warmth and the scent of the herbs.
What are the effects of a herbal compress massage?
The main effects are deep warmth and real relief from stress. The heat of the steamed compresses releases tension in the back and shoulders, and the aromatic herbs soothe the mind and the skin. It is loved most by people with desk jobs and a stiff neck, and by anyone who struggles to get warm.
Who is a herbal compress massage not suitable for?
We don’t recommend the warming compresses during pregnancy, or with inflammation, a fever or vascular problems. In that case choose the gentler Aromatherapy Massage, without heat; during pregnancy, the Pregnancy Massage. If you are allergic to herbs, fragrances or oils, please skip it, and with reduced skin sensation, poor circulation, recent surgery, blood clots or a serious illness, please check with your doctor first; the therapist will adapt the massage.
How is it different from a hot stone massage?
Both warm you deeply. Hot stones work with heat point by point, while the compresses add the scent of Thai herbs. You can also have the herbal compress massage for just 60 minutes; we offer hot stones for 90 or 120 minutes.
How old is the herbal compress tradition?
It has been recorded in writing since at least the 17th century: King Narai’s medical compendium describes a compress filled mainly with tamarind leaves. Compresses also appear in the medical texts King Rama III had carved into stone at Bangkok’s Wat Pho temple in the 1830s.
How much does a Thai herbal compress massage cost in Prague?
At the ESCAPE salon in Prague 1, a Thai herbal compress massage costs 1,990 CZK for 60 minutes, 2,490 CZK for 90 minutes and 2,990 CZK for 120 minutes. Steamed herbal compresses, oil, a welcome drink and warm tea after the massage are included. You’ll find all our other massages in the price list.
Which length should I choose?
We recommend 90 minutes: the warmth of the compresses has time to sink deep into the muscles, and nothing is rushed. If you have less time, 60 minutes is enough for the main areas; for the deepest warmth, choose 120 minutes. You can pick a time online in a few clicks.
How can I pay?
Online when you book (card, Apple Pay, Google Pay), or later at the salon by card or in cash (CZK or EUR). You can also pay with a gift voucher. Cash is 4% cheaper: the card fee we save goes to you.
Can I cancel my booking?
Yes, cancelling or changing your booking is free up to 24 hours ahead. Just call +420 734 331 444, message us on WhatsApp or email info@escapemassage.cz. We charge no fee for later cancellations; we only ask you to let us know in time.
