The warmth of hot stones and a flowing hand massage

Hot volcanic stones warm stiff muscles, and the tension finally lets go.

The therapist glides heated stones along the guest’s arm, another stone resting in her open palm beside a white orchid

We heat smooth basalt stones of volcanic origin to a pleasant, safe temperature. The therapist places them on key points of your back and shoulders and, at the same time, massages you with them over oiled skin. She alternates gliding strokes with the stones with a flowing hand massage and spends more time on stiff spots.

A hot stone massage is above all for anyone whose back, neck and shoulders are stiff from desk work and release only slowly with an ordinary massage. It also warms anyone who always feels the cold, especially on chilly winter days. Our therapists are from Southeast Asia, trained at renowned schools there, and our salon is a few steps from Old Town Square.

What you take home

  • Muscles warmed throughUnder the heat of the stones, even stiffness you’ve carried for weeks gives way, without any strong pressure.
  • Pleasantly warmThe hot stones warm you through, and you rise from the bed pleasantly warm, even on a freezing day.
  • A looser back and neckTension in your back, neck and shoulders melts under stones laid right on the stiff spots.
  • Deep calmThe warm weight of the stones draws you into a meditative calm you rarely have time for.

How it works at ESCAPE

  1. Arrive and slow downAt reception we welcome you with a drink that changes colour in front of you. You keep your underwear on (disposable underwear is ready if you prefer it), settle onto a warmed bed under a towel and simply breathe out for a moment. Only the part of the body the therapist is working on is ever uncovered.
  2. Warm stones heat you throughThe therapist lays some of the heated stones on your back and shoulders and massages you with others, using oil. You lie face down first, then on your back. The stiffness lets go gradually and naturally. She adjusts the warmth of the stones and the pressure to whatever feels good to you; just say the word.
  3. Warm tea to finishAfter the massage, take a moment to rest over a cup of warm tea. You are welcome to take a shower if you like.

We always heat the stones to a safe temperature and check them before placing them. During pregnancy, choose the pregnancy massage instead; with inflammation, vascular problems or high blood pressure, the Thai oil massage; and with a fever, postpone your massage. Please arrive 15 minutes early, so you can start without rushing.

the story behind it

Origins and tradition

Lava stones are named for their origin: they are basalt, a dark volcanic rock formed from lava flows. Massage stones are usually river stones worn smooth by the current, so they glide over oiled skin without catching. Hot stone massage in today’s form was introduced in 1993 by the Arizona massage therapist Mary Nelson as LaStone Therapy, but many cultures laid warm stones on the body long before.

warm stones

Warmth in which time stands still

Smooth lava stones come to rest on your back, and their warmth slowly spreads while the therapist’s hands glide smoothly over oiled skin. Your body yields and your mind grows quiet.

Your questions about hot stone massage

Aren’t the stones too hot?

No. We heat the stones to a pleasant, safe temperature and check them every time before placing them on you. If the warmth ever feels uncomfortable, just say so and the therapist adjusts it straight away.

How long does a hot stone massage take?

A hot stone massage takes 90 or 120 minutes. We don’t offer it any shorter, because the heat of the stones needs time to take full effect. With 120 minutes the therapist has more time for every part of the body.

Why basalt stones?

Massage stones are usually basalt, a dense, iron-rich rock: a warmed, palm-sized stone feels pleasantly heavy and gives off its heat gradually. Ours, too, are smooth basalt stones that hold their heat.

Do I have to undress?

Yes, the oil goes directly on the skin. You keep your underwear on (disposable underwear is ready if you prefer it), and on the massage table we cover you with a towel, so only the part of the body the therapist is working on is ever uncovered. You don’t need to bring anything special; for details see What to bring to a massage.

How is a hot stone massage different from a classic massage?

The heat of the stones releases the muscles more quickly than touch alone. So the massage can be gentler and yet more effective, which is why it also suits anyone who doesn’t get on with strong pressure. How the warmth of the stones works on the body is explained in our article on the benefits of hot stone massage.

Who is a hot stone massage not suitable for?

During pregnancy, choose the gentle pregnancy massage. With inflammation, vascular problems or high blood pressure we recommend a different massage, such as the Thai oil massage, and with a fever it’s better to postpone your massage. With reduced skin sensation, difficulty sensing heat, nerve damage, an acute infection, recent surgery, blood clots or a serious heart or circulation condition, please talk to a doctor first; we never place the stones on inflamed skin, wounds, fresh injuries or swelling. Everything important is summed up in our article Contraindications for hot stone massage.

How much does a hot stone massage cost in Prague?

At the ESCAPE salon in Prague 1, a hot stone massage costs 2,490 CZK for 90 minutes and 2,990 CZK for 120 minutes. Heated basalt stones, massage oil, a welcome drink and warm tea after the massage are included. You’ll find all our other massages in the price list.

How do I book a hot stone massage?

The quickest way is online in a few clicks, by phone on +420 734 331 444 or via WhatsApp. You can walk in without a booking if we have a free slot. But the massage takes at least 90 minutes and we are usually fully booked, so it’s best to book your time ahead.

How can I pay?

Online when you book (card, Apple Pay, Google Pay), or later at the salon by card or in cash (CZK or EUR). You can also pay with a gift voucher. Cash is 4% cheaper: the card fee we save goes to you.

Can I cancel my booking?

Yes, cancelling or changing your booking is free up to 24 hours ahead. Just call +420 734 331 444, message us on WhatsApp or email info@escapemassage.cz. We charge no fee for later cancellations; we only ask you to let us know in time.

Can I give a hot stone massage as a gift?

Yes. Buy a voucher for this massage, or credit of 2,000, 5,000, 10,000 or 25,000 CZK (from 5,000 CZK with 5–15% off). The PDF arrives by email right after payment.
